Biofeedback
is used for a number of different purposes, including pain control, stress and anxiety reduction. Biofeedback is a method that teaches and demonstrates how a person can most effectively use their mind to create a change in their body. As the name implies biofeedback measures the body's physiological response to stimuli (in this case thought/feeling, mental stimuli). The feedback (knowing how the body responds to certain thoughts) is used to focus and reinforce the thought process that most directly supports the client's objectives or goals. Through biofeedback a person can quickly become aware of the thinking that produces an affect upon the body. This includes thoughts that produce a calming, relaxing affect; as well as identification of thoughts that have the opposite affect; namely producing stress or tension within the body. Biofeedback works very well with analytical people. The premise of biofeedback is that thought triggers emotion which together affect the body's physiological state and well-being.
Biofeedback is most commonly used for stress reduction and management, although it is also very helpful for a variety of different reasons as well. It is used to improve health as well as performance.
Through direction and a little bit of practice a client can develop the means by which to use their thoughts to directly support their goals and objectives. During a biofeedback session you work together with a
facilitator who provides instruction on a variety of methods and techniques used to promote health and/or enhance performance. Examples include: progressive relaxation, visualization, deep breathing, mental
focusing, conscious detachment, ThoughtScape, etc.). Biofeedback is used in conjunction with the training to help you and the facilitator discover the techniques that are most effective for you. By knowing
exactly which mental scenes, images, thoughts or inner movies produce the greatest relaxation affect upon the body, it becomes easier to enter a deep state of relaxation at will (useful for a variety of medical
procedures, sleep disorder, reducing stress, lessening the severity of a panic/anxiety attack). By working with a biofeedback facilitator you can also use biofeedback to determine which thoughts hold a "charge"
to them. This information is useful for it can show the nature of what is being intneralized that produces a stress or anxiety response in the body. Clearing charged thoughts and emotions promotes
self-awareness and enhances physical health and well-being. Biofeedback can help with many health-related issues and problems, including:
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Pain Control
- Insomnia
- Tension Headaches
- Migraines
- Arthritis
- Depression
- Hyperactivity
- Lowering Blood Pressure
- Tension
- Incontinence
- Worry
